How to Fully Enjoy the Holiday Season (without blowing it!)

I created this Epic Guide because the Holiday Season has so many gifts for us… it can be such a special time filled with connection, love and joy… IF  we stay awake!  

If you’re anything like me, as soon as I feel big emotions (either “good” or “bad”), my nervous system almost automatically “goes to sleep”.  To me, that feeling is like going numb and NOT feeling….which is a horrible place to be.  

The way my nervous system numbs out is with food.  

This guide is not like anything you’ve ever heard or seen.  I am literally walking you through all the steps that help train your nervous system to be able to experience more “emotional range” so that you don’t have to numb out.

How great would it be fully and completely enjoy the holiday season WITHOUT overdoing it so you can wake up on New Years Day feeling super proud of yourself that you didn’t blow it?

The truth is that most Americans gain 5-17 pounds between Halloween and New Years.  This guide gives you deep transformative knowledge and practices that will change your behavior during a time of the year that is RIPE for learning these skills and making real inner changes!

Day 1 COUNTDOWN!  The official kickoff to the holiday season!

 

Today I walk you through one of the very first things I have all my clients consider doing: Clean up the physical cravings!

It’s near impossible to think clearly if you’re obsessed thinking about dessert while you’re still eating breakfast. It’s also hard to tell if the craving is physical or emotional (important distinction here)

So the easiest way to really jumpstart your body for the holiday season is to spend a few days (or a few weeks?) NOT putting junk in your body. Put up a clear boundary that no processed and highly refined foods go in your body, and really truly let sugar go.

It will be H.A.R.D. for the first 2-3 days, but you’ll notice by day 3-4 that you’ll feel less of a pull toward the foods you’re craving. The reason ALL diets fail (including this one that I just prescribed) is because none of them take into account the actual psycho-emotional blocks that stand in your way. (which is the main work we do inside Love it 2 Lose it Mastery) BUT… it IS a whole lot easier to work with the psycho-emotional cravings and blocks when you can “clean up” your physical cravings.

Day 2 COUNTDOWN!  The official kickoff to the holiday season!

 Today’s lesson is all about understanding WHY we emotionally eat. In a nutshell: you FEEL something you don’t want to feel.

Often times you are completely oblivious that it’s even happening…which is exactly how you end up face down in a pint of ice cream before you even realize it. 😉

From a neuroscience perspective, you lack neuronal connections that connect the top part of your brain (your rational, conscious, thinking mind) to your midbrain (your “emotional” mind), and your primal brain (your subconscious/preconscious mind).

So from this perspective, you literally can become more emotionally intelligent by creating new neural pathways that connect these parts of the brain together! (ehem… Which is exactly what we do inside Love it 2 Lose it Mastery) #shamelessplug

Day 3 COUNTDOWN!  The unofficial kickoff to the holiday season!

 

The problem IS NOT that you emotionally eat. WE ALL emotionally eat!

The struggle is when the emotions become so big that our primal brain uses the emotional eating to numb out, to not feel, to have a temporary sense of safety.

And then the next thing you know… you wake up…look down… and you “somehow” just devoured 2 pints of Ben & Jerry’s.

But today’s strategy can become a lifelong way of being in connection to food and your own body. This is how to literally enjoy your holiday cake and eat it too!

Day 5 COUNTDOWN!  The unofficial kickoff to the holiday season!

Rest, relaxation, rejuvenation, exercise, sunshine!  There’s something to be said about declining invitations to the events that don’t totally light you up in order to do some powerful recharging!

I started practicing my holiday season self-care this weekend!  Relaxing movies, adventurous bike rides in nature, and getting lost in an afternoon with my kindle and napping.  

When you take care of yourself at this level, your nervous system down-regulates and recharges you for the more stressful days… so share below what self-care are you committed to doing this holiday season to rest and rejuvenate?

 The reason the techniques in videos 1 & 3 might not work is because your primal brain will literally block your thinking mind (cortex).

If your primal brain doesn’t feel safe (in this example, because an emotional experience feels too overwhelming) then it will do whatever it needs to in order to restore safety.

And if you learned to stuff your emotions down with food…then that’s what you’ll do! But There is another way!  Watch below to start creating neuronal pathways that connect ALL the parts of your brain.  Why is this important?  So you can have CHOICE.  There will be an “awake-ness”inside of you so you can CHOOSE to either numb out… OR… not. 🙂

 Your weight loss blockers are the “self-sabotaging” behaviors that keep you from living your best life possible.  

These blockers stem from past experiences.  

And it doesn’t just have to be around weight loss… it can really be any past experience that caused your primal brain to experience not being safe.

However, if numbing out with food and overeating is the main self-sabotaging behavior that keeps excess weight on your body….it’s literally your primal brain trying to keep you safe by keeping you big… there is safety in size!  

When you can allow the emotions and memories of the past experiences to well up into your consciousness WITHOUT numbing out, and use the tools I teach inside Love it 2 Lose it Mastery… you literally heal old wounds and the sabotaging behaviors happen less and less frequently.  

Here are some past experiences that create the self-sabotaging blockers:

  • Divorce (yours or your parents)
  • Parents fighting (growing up in a volatile home)
  • Parents that were too strict or too loose with rules
  • Negative relationship with parents/caretakers or authority figure
  • Alcoholism (or really any addiction..either in yourself or in your family)
  • Bullying
  • A bad breakup
  • A big move
  • Death
  • Something someone said to you
  • Forced to clean your plate
  • You lost weight, then something negative happens
  • Positive memories or eating with someone you love
  • Sexual wounding/abuse/trauma (sexual boundary violations

BTW:  Sexual abuse is the #1 Weight Loss Blocker and the #1 place to work to truly heal these blocks.
