Day 5: Clean & Lean

Today was not a typical day…

…but then again, Sunday’s usually aren’t typical. It’s the one day I sleep in with no guilt. It’s also the day that Miguel and I spend way too much time at Starbucks drinking coffee, and yes… sometimes grabbing a pastry. Most of them suck at Starbucks, but I’ve been pretty addicted to the Morning Bun, which is a cinnamon and sugar croissant.

The good news is I didn’t do that. The bad news is that I did “cheat” by complete accident.

I finally crawled out of bed around 10:30am (And I know what all you parents out there are thinking!) I woke up very hungry, there wasn’t any food in the house, so we decided to go out to eat for breakfast. I wasn’t too nervous because I know I can always get an omelet with veggies, and maybe some chicken sausage or something. But in my head on the drive I was already reminding myself of what I needed to steer clear of: no cheese on the omelet, no milk or dairy, ask that they cook it with minimal oil, no added sugar, etc.

I had a game plan and I was ready to rock!

So I found this yummy scramble on the menu that included eggs, mushrooms, onions, bacon and Hollandaise sauce. This sounded incredibly good to me. I had them add avocado (to balance it out with a little healthy fat), and I was set. It was huge, I was hungy, I ate it slowly and enjoyed it.

Actually… let me back up. What really sounded good to me was the banana pancakes or the french toast. Which tells me one of two things: 1. I’m still craving sugar on day 5 or 2. I was just so darn hungry. When you let yourself get too hungry (ie… low blood sugar), your brain JUST WANTS GLUCOSE, and the only way it knows how to get it is by telling you to eat sugar. Careful not to let yourself get too hungry… this can have detrimental effects, like ordering pancakes!

yup...it was smothered in Hollandaise sauce...which apparently is made with butter.

After enjoying my leisurely breakfast, I got home and decided to look up Hollandaise sauce. I’m not sure what prompted me to look it up, but something caused me to second guess my decision. I truly thought that Hollandaise sauce was made out of egg yolks and spices. But of course my friend google showed me that in addition to the yolks, they add about a pound of butter!

Grrrrr….

Very annoying. Of all the things that I could have gotten wrong, butter really isn’t the worst, and in fact, will be a fat that I add back in after these 30 days. But because it is technically dairy, it’s supposed to be off the list for the next 30 days.

It was such a big meal eaten so late in the day (I think we finished by noon), that I didn’t eat again until dinner, which I fully redeemed myself with a nice veggie salad mixed with cubed butternut squash and salmon. Yummy!

I mowed this down at Whole Foods during our Sunday grocery shopping. Lots of greens and veggies from the salad bar topped with salmon. I used a little vinegar for dressing.

Happy Sunday to me.

Breakfast - 2 egg omlette with kale and guacamole
Lunch - tuna, roasted cauliflower (left from last night), half an avocado, shredded White cabbage
Dinner - delicious old favurite. Whole roasted chicken ( I only ate 1 leg section not the whole thing!)’ roasted with lemon, chilli, thyme stuffed under the skin and finished with a huge handful of fresh mint stirred into the juices. Served on top of a huge pile of sautéed kale. I made roasted potatoes for my husband and for the first time ever didn’t eat any.
Exercise - 45 minute fast walk pushing my 2 sons in the double stroller

    Leanne,

You should probably be ok with the creamer. The bigger culprits are the straight milks: like almond or hemp milk… they’re often filled with added sugar. Let me know how it goes.

Coffee creamer question - Last week we talked about the various options for possible non-dairy healthy substitutes & we talked about So Delicious coconut creamer at Whole Foods. I checked it this weekend and they dont have any unsweetened varities but the sugar content didn’t seem too bad. Just want to make sure that is an OK substitute. Thanks

    Jenny,

What a great experience and great examples of how to make this work.

I traveled over the weekend, and had second thoughts about going because of this challenge, but it was great! When the family made a big pasta dish, I substituted the pasta for thin asparagus. Tomato Sauce (no sugar) with Chicken over Asparagus. It was delicious. No one looked twice at me.

At a restaurant I ordered a veggie omelet with every veggie, no cheese, and a side of sausage and avocado. Easy and yummy. I must be feeling it because I didn’t even want the hash browns or toast. (crazy!!)

I did drink V8 at the restaurant, with no label in sight to check for sugar-not sure about that.

For the car ride, I packed plenty of carrot sticks, celery, almonds, pre-cooked chicken breast (just in case) and boiled eggs. I threw in a pack of veggie crackers. And of course, a gallon of water and kombucha tea! I was crazy surprised that I didn’t even crave the chips my son and husband were eating.

    Elayna,

I absolutely LOVE your enthusiasm! I think I will be drinking my kombucha from a wine glass from here on out! Keep us posted!

    good morning day 5!

first day on the blog. i’ve been getting my ducks in a row and since i’m old school and like to keep my food journal on paper, i may not repeat the nitty gritty here every day.

smooth sailing so far and i’m really digging the challenge of inventing new and creative combinations of foods that are clean and satisfying as well as trying some things that are brand new to me.

my daily apple cider (vinegar) shooter is a great example. that baby wakes me up! whoa. surprisingly, i like it! i’m looking for every opportunity to make this challenge FUN. on that front, one thing i’ve made part of my routine after dinner is to pour myself a cup of unsweetened almond milk, but to drink it from a WINE GLASS. feels special and makes me smile. :) i’ll probably do this with kombucha too to shake things up.

  10. Audra Baker says:

The only problem with Hollandaise (which I totally messed up on my first time through the 30-days) is the butter… and butter is only off limits because it’s technically “dairy”. If you can get Hollandaise made with clarified butter (ghee), then dig in… but good luck finding it… you’ll probably have to make your own!

    Day 5:

Oh, gosh! If only Hollandaise were legal. Sigh.

Dinner: 3 scallops wrapped in bacon (yum); 1/2 acorn squash w/ olive oil, dollop of almond butter, & rosemary (double yum); 2 c. asparagus

“Dessert”: carob mint tea & 1/3 c coconut juice

  12. Smruti says:

    breakfast: green shake

    1 cup coffee+ coconut milk

lunch: salad greens, chopped tomato, beets, chickpeas, carrots, hardboiled egg, 1 tsp olive oil +balsamic vinegar

    snack- handful almonds

preworkout: L-glutamine, amazing grass and coconut water
post workout 2nd half L-glutamine, amazing grass and coconut water

dinner 1 small baked sweet potato, sautee tofu and green beans

  13. Allison says:

I am taking the challenge on my own and started on Monday. I’m glad to see that you “cheated” (even if unknowingly) since I had white potatoes Tuesday night and was feeling bad about it - I didn’t really have any options without foods I’m supposed to be avoiding so went with the best option.

Showing your meals helps give me ideas for my own meals, so thank you for that. I made my own veggie + meat marinara over spaghetti squash Monday night and have been enjoying leftovers for lunch. :) Will you continue posting past day 9?
